Moving Out From My Parents' House

Friday, 3 July 2020 Arnhem, Nederland

Hey guys,

As you may have read in my last post, I recently moved out of my parents' house. For those that do not know, I am 19 years old and a student in the Dutch city Utrecht. Because of a few reasons that I will not go into right now, I decided to not move to Utrecht but to stay in Arnhem. However, I did move to the centre of the city, for me this is much more practical when going to Utrecht (when the universities open the doors again) and the city centre where I already spent most of my time.

It all started with this not that charming picture of me (my mum made it :P), signing the papers. I now live in a house that I share with others. With 4 floors, there live around 18 people in this house. Every floor has a kitchen and a bathroom, so I share those with 4 others. My room is divided into 2 parts, this gives me a lot of space, so it feels more like a studio/apartment than just a student room.

For me, this was the first time furnishing a place like this from scratch. And to be honest, it was quite overwhelming some times. But because of the lockdown, I luckily had a lot of free time on my hands to invest in this place. When my parents and I had stripped down the room, it was time for me to think of what colours I wanted, what floor, how I would lay it out, etc. I choose to paint all the walls white. Mostly because the back of the room can get pretty dark when there's no sun. I did not want to paint the walls in a dark colour because this can make a room very small. After endless trips to the local home depot, we got the paint for the walls (and floor), and some other random stuff.

I was blessed to have a lot of help from my parents, siblings and my boyfriend. Without them, moving would have taken twice the amount of time I think. When all walls and were painted, my parents and I fixed the water, because we had planned to install a small kitchen block (from Ikea), where I can wash my dishes and make some coffee. Then we lay the floor and Bram and I painted the other floor. I did this to save costs and because I really liked the look of the small planks on the floor. When this was all done it was time to furnish. By this time I already had an idea of how I wanted to furnish the place, so it was time to go to the Ikea. For real, I lost count for how many times we went.

My budget was of course not that large, so the Ikea was my best option. I am still saving up to buy the rest of my closet, I choose one that can be arranged in the best way that is practical for me. This is a more expensive option, but this is my only storage so I really wanted this. For furnishing I really took my time, I am still not entirely done. I first bought the big pieces of furniture and based on those I bought things that fit with it.

I have many different types of wood in my room, and I choose a more industrial look to tie it all together. Besides that, a reoccurring colour is green. I let this come back mostly in my plants, my collection has grown a lot recently (and I'm not complaining). Even though I have now lived here for a little more than a month, it is still not finished. There are still some things that I have on my to-buy-list, and for some things, I have not decided what I want yet. So it is a work in progress, but I like that. I see myself living here for at least a few years, so it doesn't have to be perfect from the start.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this post. Maybe it gave you a bit of inspiration for your own room or house. Or maybe it was just a fun read. Have a nice day, I will see you in the next post!

Love,

Julia
