Normal People by Sally Rooney

Hi!

A while ago, Sally Rooney's Normal People was recommended to me. I hadn't heard of her and her novel before, yet the description of her book appealed to me. Before I knew it, I bought it, read it and loved it. It was something I had never read before, her way of writing was different yet powerful. I knew that I wanted to share this book, but it took me a while to put words onto the paper.

Because I study literature, I am reading more and more different genres. Not only because I have to, but because it interests me. This was the first contemporary novel I have read for myself, and I made me want to read more novels in this genre. It is so realistic and in some ways relatable, yet also unusual and remarkable. A lot of adjectives, I know, but let me explain.

Normal people is a coming-of-age story about two people (Connell and Marianne) that cannot stay away from each other. During the novel, we see 4 years of their life, in which both characters deal with loneliness, the student lifestyle, friendship and their romantical relationship. It is incredible how Rooney creates this sense of connection even when both characters are apart. Yet, they always seem to find their way back to each other. While both characters have their own odd character traits and life experiences, the way in which Rooney presents them makes them realistic. Both are dealing with life and what it has given them. Their social backgrounds playing a big role in it.

To be honest, I am sure that this is not a book for everyone, but so is not every style of music or film. However, I deeply enjoyed this novel, even though it put me into tears some times. As a reader, I felt connected with both characters and wanted them to get together. It was a great read and personally, I think that this will become a classic.

By the way, follow me on Goodreads to see other books I am reading!

Love,

Julia
