My First Week As A University Student

Monday, 9 September 2019 Utrecht, Nederland

Hi guys!

Most of you will probably know that I started university this week. In today's post I want to share my experience in this first week of university as a 'firsty'! I am still getting to know the city and the university, so don't call me a pro or anything. This is just my experience :P

Who can spot me? :P

Intro camp.
In the last weekend of August I went to an organized introduction camp, with other first-year English students. It was a lot of fun, I met new people, played games and we partied (of course!). We were with 50 students, only a third of all the Bachelor students of English language and Culture. Together with my intro 'mum' and group we played games and compeated against other teams. We stayed there for two nights and went home around Sunday afternoon.

Orientation day.
This Monday we had a orientation day, we got to know our teachers, tutor, tutor group, mentor and all the students that didn't attend the camp. Around noon we started with a city tour, we saw all the locations where we could have seminars and lectures. The university of Utrecht doesn't have one campus, but it's spread out across the city. Utrecht is the campus :)! During the tour we got to know commitees of the student association, Albion. Most of the English students register with this association to get discount and to go to parties, sportactivites, academic activitees and the yearly trip! On this day, they introduced themselves and all the commitees. If we want we can join them and help organise all that fun stuff! I am particulary interested in joining the magazine they publish every period during the year. Maybe to write a article or design the pages, something like that!

My first lecture.
On Wednesday the year really started. My first lecture started at 11 am and I was quite on time! I'm still getting to know the city and all it's buildings, so I arrived early in case I got lost. The lecture itself was very interesting. We started with information about the website, what the course would look like and what exams there will be. After that we went on with a few poems we had to read in advance. We analyzed them and talked about them. I find it very difficult to find the meaning of the writer in poems, but I still find it very interesting. Half way we took a small break and we continued with the poems. The almost 2 hour lecture flew by and it was already time to go home. I already know a few deadlines of essays, dates of exams and other homework assignments. I do feel a little overwhelmed, but it all has to settle. When I've found my way around the city, I'm sure things will get easier. Less to worry about, more focus to assignments and readings! :)

My first seminar.
This first period I have two courses, 'The Writer's Lab' and 'The Sound Lab'. My first lecture was about 'The Writer's Lab', so poems, novels but also writing essays and paragraphs etc. On Wednesday we learned about poems. The first seminar I had was of  'The Sound Lab' course. We talked about sounds of words and letters, about different languages and dialects. Oh I love this so much, personally I find it so interesting how we create sounds, how we speak, differences between languages, etc. I don't know why but I just have this urge to learn more about it. This seminar was very interesting and nice. The meaning of seminars is that you discuss topics with each other and that the professor/teacher learns us things about it (of course).

At the end of this year we need to choose what we like the most. The literary side of the linguistic side (that sound stuff and more :P). I hope I can maybe get a mix of both. Focusing on the linguistic side but maybe with some creative writing or something. I don't know, I still have time. This is what my first week as a University student looked like. I hope you enjoyed this post!

Love,

Julia

Btw, my boyfriend and I are 3 years together today! :)
